A game idea...maybe
This past weekend, I was considering the concept of a game that I have no idea if it is really something that would work out without being a headache and/or confusing.

I think I'd kind of like to take a look at HP characters from one of the eras, each having their own pros and cons, and play out their years in Hogwarts.

No RP would ever last that long, granted.. So I was thinking about it.. what if it was set up to follow one "graduating class" and characters in grades above/below are all NPC'd if/when needed... but starting out at some point early on at Hogwarts, ideally 1st year.

The game would have 3 months dedicated to each "year" which is where it would get tricky. Instead of an expedited and confusing timeline, certain events from each year are chosen for that year to focus on (5th years would include 0WLS for example) and there'd be fade out transitions to get the time moving from one point in another.

Game starts out, for example, a few days before the kids start 1st year. The pacing is one day REAL TIME = one day GAME TIME.

There would be time for their first trip to Diagon Alley, the first ride on Hogwarts express... the SORTING CEREMONY. (what would be really cool is to actually kind of have a community thread for this, including some characters getting SORTED during this, in which the player didn't know ahead of time which house they'd be placed in... obvs not canon characters who have houses.

After the first few weeks of school, kids getting used to the castle/classmates... it would jump to later in the year... perhaps for holiday festivities, or some other event. If following the trio era, here's where it's easiest -- we've got the books already laying out canon events to jump too. However, it wouldn't give freedom for surprise sorting IN game.. and less freedom of plot and where things are going.. (pros & cons)

At any rate, I imagine the game spending at most 3 months on a year, but following the transition from the wide eyed students who first enter the school, their transitions into adolescents, the tough decisions between good and bad, and what the lines really are, the first crushes/relationships/kisses... etc.. but taking the kids and write them out the game concluding when they finish Hogwarts.

What it would take though, is a group of players who are interested and want this exercise in character development. Ones that wouldn't mind fading out of one point in time, to the next, to keep the calender going (think of the books, not EVERY day is written in the books, just the important events). I think it would work best, ideally, if there was a full class of students ready to go before the game opened, especially in the case where there will be some spontaneous sorting during the game. The game would definitely have community wide threads put up -- not that the tags have to be on the "epic scale of awesome" but even small, quick responses that focus more on actions/words than the thought process to get them there. (Because, again, reading books, you hardly ever get every characters thoughts every time they make ANY move...)

Personally, there are more than a few characters I'd love to either grow them up, or watch them grow up. The MWPP era could prove to be more interesting, simply because less is known about them... but even the trio-era focusing on a year that's NOT the trio's year - because a lot of their events are already told (we know why draco and harry hate each other, etc..) True, there are minor characters from that era that could be fun in this setting... but their seventh year is a horrible dark place and the point of this game isn't really to be dark, which is why I think Fred/George/Angelina/Lee's year would be a better pick for the trio-era.)

I would not attempt it with the next-gen, because those games struggle even when they're straight forward and not complicated.

This post has been long, probably tldr; but... if you did read it, any/all feedback is appreciated. Even if you hated the idea, or don't think it's possible. Because, again, I'm not even sure a concept like this would work out.. I just think that it would provide a lot of satisfaction to actually... you know... take a character and grow them up like that.

This entry will remain public, because even if the game idea is stolen, and kuddos to anyone who thinks they can do this and get interest in it, all I ask is that I am linked to the game so I can play in it ;)

I have no real feedback other to say that the concept of this game sounds ... AMAZING. And I would totally up for such a collective work in character development.

In case you were interested in placing a hold while I work on the details! Here ya go!

(Decided to go for Hogwarts Class of 1996, and if the game is a success, later try to do this with the MWPP's year!) :)

I think this kind of thing sounds like it would be a lot of fun to play out. Not just because of the character development, but because of the chance to play the same character at several different ages, plus the opportunity to play, regardless of how briefly, characters in first, second, and third year; most in-school games start at fourth year (and even that's becoming a rarity as the in-school games are starting to focus more on sixth and seventh years). I don't think I've ever been in a game that actually had a sorting ceremony played out in-game (though perhaps instead of a SURPRISE!! sorting ceremony, maybe with non-canon characters [or non-canon house placements], have the character's player make up a list of their top two or three choices for house for their character, and then the sorting would be based on that, instead of just random or something).

idk if that made any sense, but this does sound like it would be an interesting experiment, and I'd want to hop on-board and see how it turns out.

I'd love to play a character throughout their 7 years. Don't really have any feedback though.

You know I'd love to do that with Sev, but the concept is an awesome idea for any set of characters, really.

I wind up ficing my characters or psling them at all different ages so it definitely sounds like something people might be interested in. It might keep the RPers with shorter attention spans around too since it's like a new game every so often.

I have no real constructive feedback other than I LOVE this idea, and if you do follow through with it, I am very, very interested!

I think this sort of stuff is exactly what we need to keep Harry Potter RP fresh! Yay for you and your awesome :DD.

This is a fantastic idea, and it obviously appeals to a lot of people. Now I wish Cho was in Fred and George's year because I'd love to do this for her. How would you handle PBs?

As for PB's, I think I'll have everyone chose their PBs up front for the different stages, 1st-3rd, 4-5th, 6th-7th.. that sort of thing! But all up front so they can even have them uploaded before the game starts X-amount for ickle!PB, x-amount for middle!PB, & x-amount for teenage!PB! type thing if they chose!

There's conflicting info for him at the lexicon! At one part it put him in the class of 96, and in another, in the class of 95... so I'm still trying to hammer that one out for certain!

Book 3: The noise of the storm was even louder in the common roorn. Harry knew better than to think the match would be canceled; Quidditch matches weren't called off for trifles like thunderstorms. Nevertheless, he was starting to feel very apprehensive. Wood had pointed out Cedric Diggory to him in the corridor; Diggory was a fifth year and a lot bigger than Harry. Seekers were usually light and speedy, but Diggory's weight would be an advantage in this weather because he was less likely to be blown off course.

So, I think my math is right? (stupid lexicon!!) Wonderful site, but there's lots of stupid mistakes! like annoying spelling errors! And I'd love a page of quidditch house quidditch teams (by year!).

I think that's right, then. Though the fact that he had to have been 17 by the start of his 6th year is what through me off, so he was probably born just a few weeks shy of being in the year above that. (Can you imagine becoming an of-age wizard during the first couple weeks of your 6th year, and still having to go to school for 2 full years after being of-age! STRANGE!)

JKR's math is funny. But yours is right <3

Ha ha, right!! That's what throws a lot of people off, I think. I THINK though that he could have a birthday as late as October 31 (because I play Cho) to put his name in the goblet. (Did Angelina put her name in too? Or was that Alicia?) Cho makes me memorize Cedric trivia.

I think this is a fantastic idea. For pbs, maybe get people to pick out the Preteen and Teen look before the game starts. Not much help but that's all I can think of to suggest.

I definitely want in on this.

I think this would be..beyond interesting! It'd be really nice to see them growing up, to see who they become. I think playing out three months of their time would be good. Or maybe three months of each year not necessarily in order? So first year: September (for the sorting hat and getting to know each other) maybe December (first Christmas) and June so they can reflect on what's gone on. Though I suppose it spanning three months in one would be slightly easier.

Year wise I personally would pick possibly Gred/Forge year because it's still in the midst of it without being too focused on it as they are. The war is still there without it being this major, major thing from the get-go. Or maybe the year below? That way the war is concluded in game which would be nice to wrap up and they have the next year to fully...come to terms and the like.

Either way, I totally want in! If you need any help setting this up or running it I would love to help! <3

That sounds like something I would have loved to play. It's a brilliant idea, I think, and could be very well done, as long as people were willing to go the whole way since with this extent of character development it's not exactly feasible to allow drops and re-claims of characters after the first or maybe second game year.

I would have suggested Marauders-era, actually, but the Fred/George year is a really good one if you choose trio-era. My other suggestion would be Percy's year (cause isn't that only one year higher than F/G? or two...?), but I think the only names we really have from that one are Percy, Penny, and Oliver, right? And Ollie might be older... I'm so bad at my canon. *sigh*

Possibly with PBs, you could have them pick out all their PBs from the very beginning? Like, if they change their mind in game about their next choice, they can bring it up with you (or whoever mods) later, but at least then they have a hold on it? The beauty with this is that teen-aged PBs often work for up to a four-year span, especially if you're loose on how old they must look, so you would only have to change once, maybe twice.

I really wish you luck with this. It sounds amazing.
